From Toy Project to Thriving Business: Caspar's Journey with Keep The Score

Caspar transformed a simple idea into Keep The Score, evolving it from a hobby to a thriving business

How many times have you wanted to keep score—whether it's for a game or just to hold a grudge against friends? Thanks to Caspar, the mastermind behind Keep The Score, keeping track has never been easier.

Like many startups, Keep The Score emerged from a personal problem—as well as a "this could be fun" mindset. Its humble beginnings trace back to an office and a simple whiteboard.

Caspar noticed names and scores casually written in a corner, sparking the idea for a project. "I wanted to try a full-stack project," he recalled. What started as a playful experiment soon grew into a platform with global appeal.

The Early Days

Keep The Score began as a side project Caspar worked on during nights and weekends while still holding down his full-time job.

For many, making the jump from side project to full-time gig can be intimidating, especially when you're accustomed to the stability of working for someone else, but Caspar had confidence in his work.

"I didn't expect it to become a business, which made it easier—no pressure," he said. After four years, adding payment options marked a turning point. "I realised I could make this a full-time business," Caspar said, solidifying his commitment.

Caspar's confidence grew as he relied on users for their valuable insights.

User Feedback: A Catalyst for Innovation

User feedback is a source of inspiration that many founders overlook. However, Caspar credits it with shaping the development of Keep The Score - music to my ears as a UX designer.

"I made it easy to give feedback—there’s a button on every page," Caspar shared.

When users mentioned “OBS,” initially ignored, Caspar investigated. "I fell down a rabbit hole," he admitted. OBS, or Open Broadcaster Software, opened new possibilities for serving streamers. This led to the creation of streaming scoreboards, now a major revenue source.

Users can add scoreboards and overlays to popular streaming software like OBS, Streamlabs, XSplit, vMix, creating richer experiences when streaming.

This experience underscored an important lesson: "You need to know when to listen to customers and when to ignore them." Wise advice that points out the risks of trying to satisfy everyone who offers feedback.

1 - 0 to Caspar

For Caspar, the greatest reward has been the freedom—“true autonomy, mastery, and purpose.”

Financially, it’s been rewarding too. "I now earn as much as, or more than, my corporate peers," he said. While many climb the corporate ladder, Caspar achieved similar success in a few years by following his passion.

Looking forward, Caspar is optimistic: "I see Keep The Score doubling revenue yearly for the next 2-3 years," driven by innovation and user focus.

His journey, from a simple idea to a profitable business, is an example of how to find success when you turn up every day and deliver.

I wonder if Caspar pauses to really consider how much he has achieved. From whiteboard, to providing scoreboard opportunities for football, soccer, basketball and more.
