edCode: Building a Gamified Coding Platform to Rival the Giants

Andrew and Simon are building edCode, a gamified coding platform with AI tools, aiming for massive growth

Andrew Miller and his co-founder Simon Xu. started edCode with a simple yet ambitious goal: to make learning to code accessible, engaging, and fun.

“We saw the success of platforms like Duolingo and Khan Academy and wanted to apply that model to coding,” Andrew explains. The result is edCode, a gamified learning platform designed for coders of all levels.

The team has drawn inspiration from platforms that balance education with fun, adding their own twist.

edCode’s lessons come with rewards and incentives to keep learners motivated. “Our aim is to provide a seamless experience, where users can move from beginner to advanced while enjoying the process,” says Andrew.

Beyond just learning, they want to build a space where users can take on community-made courses, work on projects, and even participate in multiplayer activities.

AI Meets Interview Prep

Currently in beta, their latest feature is Codey, an AI-driven assistant designed for job interview preparation.

“Codey helps users not only prepare for interviews but also provides code evaluation with suggestions for improvement,” Andrew explains. “We want to use AI in a way that enhances learning, not just for the sake of it.”

The team envisions Codey as a core part of the platform’s offerings, helping users bridge the gap between learning and employment.

Growing Rapidly from the Start

In their first week after launch, edCode attracted 500 users.

Andrew notes, “We’ve been growing faster than we anticipated.” The platform is still in its early stages, but Andrew is confident about its potential. “Whether you’ve never written a line of code or you’re a seasoned developer, we want to offer something valuable for everyone.”

The plan is to expand into various coding languages, offering courses that range from beginner to advanced. Looking further ahead, Andrew hints at future expansions into fields like product management and cybersecurity.

However, for now, the focus remains squarely on building the best possible coding experience.

Challenges and Next Steps

Like any startup, edCode has faced its share of challenges, particularly around scalability and SEO.

“Choosing a scalable architecture has been tough, but we’re making progress,” Andrew reflects. Despite these hurdles, he remains optimistic about the future: “We think edCode could eventually rival platforms like Coursera or Khan Academy.”
