Coocoor: Simplifying Web Application Security with a Bootstrapped Approach

Coocoor's founder developed a simple, affordable web security tool, bootstrapping growth to maintain product vision and control

Robin, the founder of Coocoor, has been immersed in the software engineering world since 2005, building numerous web applications along the way. 

One persistent challenge he faced was continuously analysing the risks and security posture of these web applications. "There was a clear need for a solution that could monitor security risks outside the firewall 24/7, providing alerts and insights to help minimise cybersecurity threats," Robin explained.

Despite extensive searching, existing cybersecurity products were either prohibitively expensive or overly complicated to set up and use. They lacked the flexibility and ease of use that Robin required. 

Frustrated, he decided to develop his own solution. "I created a system that automatically tracks software components, continuously monitors security risks, and provides instant notifications for high-risk vulnerabilities," he said.

Aiming for MVP

After developing a Minimal Viable Product (MVP), Robin realised he wasn't alone in facing these challenges. Conversations with other professionals in the industry revealed a shared need for a simple yet effective solution for web application risk analysis. 

This validation encouraged him to refine and expand the product further. 

"I didn't initially approach this project with a traditional business mindset. My primary goal was solving a problem I experienced firsthand. However, as I continued to develop the product, its potential to benefit others became evident," he noted. "This organic approach—building to solve my own problem first and then discovering a broader market need—has been a unique and rewarding journey."

Coocoor's target users are software engineers, web application developers, and IT security professionals managing web applications and needing to analyse risk and ensure security. 

Conversations with these individuals revealed they often face challenges similar to Robin's: analysing risk, tracking security advisories, and continuously monitoring web applications from outside the firewall. "They seek solutions that are both effective and simple to use, without breaking the bank," Robin said.

To reach these target users, Coocoor focuses on creating valuable content to help users maintain the security posture of their web applications. 

This content is shared via a newsletter, social media channels, and the Coocoor website to attract organic traffic. Additionally, they offer a free version of the product with basic features at no cost for a year for startups. "This helps build trust and demonstrate our product's value," Robin explained. Establishing partnerships with tech companies and cybersecurity firms that can recommend Coocoor to their clients is also a key strategy. "

By focusing on these strategies, we aim to build a community of satisfied users who benefit from our solution and help spread the word within their professional networks," he said.

One of the biggest challenges has been developing a product that balances simplicity with effectiveness. "Many existing cybersecurity solutions are either too complex or too expensive, and creating a tool that avoids these concerns requires significant design and development effort," Robin noted.

Another major challenge was gaining trust in a crowded market. As a new entrant, establishing credibility and attracting early adopters was difficult. To overcome this, 

Coocoor focused on building a strong MVP that solved the exact problem Robin experienced and reached out to his network for feedback. "Their feedback was invaluable in refining the product and helping spread the word organically," he said.

Staying updated with the cybersecurity landscape was also challenging. "Committing to continuous learning and adapting the product to address new threats and vulnerabilities as they emerged has helped keep the product relevant and effective for users," Robin explained.

By focusing on these strategies and staying true to the vision of solving real problems for users, Coocoor has been able to navigate these challenges and steadily grow its user base.

Funding

Instead of seeking immediate external funding, Robin bootstrapped the development process, using personal savings and reinvesting revenue from initial customers back into the business. "We have no plans to seek external funding in the future," he stated. 

"External funding often comes with expectations and pressure that can divert focus from the core mission. Bootstrapping allowed us to maintain full control over the direction and development of the product, staying true to our vision of creating an effective product with the power of simplicity tailored to user needs."

Coocoor's immediate goal is to enhance the product by introducing features that cater to the changing needs of its users. This includes refining the monitoring system, integrating security measures, and enhancing the user interface.

 "We aim to expand our user base by targeting software engineers, web developers, and IT security professionals through marketing strategies such as content marketing, networking within the industry, and forming partnerships," Robin explained. Gathering and assessing user feedback to pinpoint areas for improvement and ensuring that the product continues to meet user requirements is also a priority. 

Strengthening customer support systems and resources is essential, ensuring users can easily access assistance when necessary.

In the long term, Coocoor aspires to establish itself as a leading provider of External Attack Surface Management (EASM) solutions for web applications. "We seek recognition for our dedication to simplicity, effectiveness, and user satisfaction," Robin said. 

Additionally, Coocoor envisions developing complementary products and services. "Our commitment lies in achieving sustainable growth through sound financial decisions and ongoing reinvestment in the business while exploring organic growth opportunities," he concluded.
